The ICPSR Summer Program: Your home for learning statistics and quantitative methods
About Us
Since 1963, the ICPSR Summer Program in Quantitative Methods has provided rigorous, comprehensible training in statistics, quantitative and qualitative methods, and data analysis. Our commitment to providing premier instruction in courses that are affordable and enjoyable has inspired generations of researchers to call the ICPSR Summer Program their home for learning statistics!
An international consortium of more than 800 academic institutions and research organizations, ICPSR provides leadership and training in data access, curation, and methods of analysis for the research community. ICPSR is a unit within the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan and maintains its office in Ann Arbor.
Our Mission
We are here to train a diverse community of scholars in statistical techniques and research methods. We empower our program participants, from undergrads to mid-career researchers, to immediately upgrade and sharpen the skills vital in their work to address real-world problems, develop policy solutions, and positively impact the future.
The ICPSR Summer Program Difference
Summer is just the beginning! Our participants tell us that the ICPSR Summer Program did more than train them—it transformed their careers and lives. Here’s how:
Dynamic training:
Our courses feature in-depth, applied instruction that is responsive to your specific research needs and goals. We welcome you to bring and use your own data in our courses!
Diverse content:
Our Blalock Lecture Series features free presentations on substantive topics and methodological issues, such as teaching data literacy, responsible data management, racial and gender inequality, and the use of big data in public health research.
Financial support:
We offer more than $150,000 in student scholarships every year, enabling the next generation of researchers to acquire the skills and knowledge they need to do innovative, impactful work.
Teaching opportunities:
We offer teaching assistant positions for graduate students, providing them with invaluable pedagogical experience to take into future teaching positions at colleges and universities.
Collaborative community:
Our collaborative learning environment makes it easy to foster lifelong connections with your instructors and fellow participants. You may find your next research project collaborator right here (and many have)!
Unparalleled networking:
With researchers from around the world, our community is full of professional connections that will last a lifetime.
What Our Participants Are Saying
Dave Armstrong is the Canada Research Chair in Political Methodology and an associate professor in the Department of Political Science at Western University. In this video, Dave discusses his experiences as a participant in the ICPSR Summer Program:
“The hierarchical linear modeling workshop I attended was fantastic. I used the things I learned on a publication on which I was currently working. The instructors even altered the curriculum a bit to better meet the participants' needs.”
“The summer program was an intensely enjoyable experience. The education was challenging and exciting and the teachers and the TAs highly knowledgeable, enthusiastic and helpful. However, nothing can top all of the wonderful colleagues that I got to know during the program. During this short period I made some truly great friends. I had the time of my life!”
