Maggie Levenstein named 2004 AAAS Fellow, for distinguished contributions to industrial organization and historical economics, especially information systems, competition dynamics, cartels and antitrust policies, as well as systematic improvements to national social science data policies.

ANN ARBOR–ICPSR Director Maggie Levenstein will be recognized as a 2024 Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), “for distinguished contributions to industrial organization and historical economics, especially information systems, competition dynamics, cartels, and antitrust policies, as well as systematic improvements to national social science data policies.”

Levenstein is among the 471 scientists, engineers, and innovators who have been elected 2024 Fellows for their scientifically and socially distinguished achievements throughout their careers.

An economist, Levenstein became director of ICPSR in 2016. She is also a Research Professor at the University of Michigan’s Institute for Social Research, a Professor at the U-M School of Information, and Adjunct Professor of Business Economics and Policy at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business. She is the Principal Investigator of the NSF Infrastructure project, Research Data Ecosystem (RDE), and the NIH’s Social, Behavioral, and Economic COVID-19 Consortium Coordinating Center (SBE CCC).

“It is a great honor to be recognized as an AAAS fellow and to join this amazing group of scientists and scholars. I’m particularly proud of the work that ICPSR and I have done in increasing access to social science data, broadening the voices that bring evidence-driven insights to our understanding of the world we live in together,” Levenstein said.

A tradition dating back to 1874, election as an AAAS Honorary Fellow is a lifetime honor, and all Fellows are expected to maintain the highest standards of professional ethics and scientific integrity. AAAS is the world’s largest general scientific society and the publisher of the Science family of journals.

“This year’s class of Fellows are the embodiment of scientific excellence and service to our communities,” said Sudip S. Parikh, PhD, AAAS chief executive officer and executive publisher of the Science family of journals. “At a time when the future of scientific enterprise in the US and around the world is uncertain, their work demonstrates the value of sustained investment in science and engineering.”

ISR Director Kate Cagney praised Levenstein's commitment to data stewardship. "I would like to extend my congratulations to Dr. Levenstein on behalf of all at the Institute for Social Research. This recognition acknowledges her longstanding commitment to data quality and data access, critical at any point but certainly in this moment."
